Idol M@ster: Less than meets the eye.
I have been hard pressed to find anything that interests me this season. I don't know what it is, but a lot of the stuff out there seems to go heavy on the cutesy girly themes. I can do cutesy girly sometimes (Azumanga Daioh FTW!), but I try not to make a habit of it.
I decided to ignore all the warning bells in my head, and I streamed ep. 1 of Idol M@ster. Let me begin by saying I did not read any reviews or look up any information on the show before hand. I just saw it was super popular and I wanted to see what all the hoopla was about.
From just the name, I have to say I expected some mech action. I was way off. The show is about 13 girls trying to make it as pop idols, and the manager that has to help them achieve those dreams. No mechs involved. I will give it this, the show is very well drawn. The art is beautiful and the environment looks so real. But you have to admit, these days, with the standard having been raised so high, that is to be expected. As for the characters, the only description I have for them is.....cute. Almost too much so. It is a veritable orgy of moe and kawaii, and if that's your kind of thing, then this show might make your head explode. The dialogue follows this theme as well. Most of it is childish, highlighting the naivete of the young female characters. It's actually quite well done in that sense. This is not my kind of show by any means, but I can see why people love it.
Bear in mind that in 2007, a show by the name of Idol M@ster: Xenoglossia was released. This is an alternate universe to the show that was released just this month, and the two are completely unrelated in story. Xenoglossia had mechs.
I'm sure most f you have already seen some of the new Idol M@ster. What do you think about it?
